How to create a Copper Golem

3 min read 3 October 2026

The Copper Golem is finally coming to Minecraft with update 1.21.9, marking the return of one of the most loved ideas from the Minecraft Live 2021 Mob Vote.
Although it lost to the Allay back then, Mojang has confirmed that this crafted copper companion will officially join the game very soon.

In this guide, you will find everything we know so far: crafting, abilities, oxidation and possible uses, so you are ready to build your first Copper Golem as soon as the update is out.

What is the Copper Golem?

The Copper Golem is a small mechanical mob designed to:

  1. Randomly press copper buttons, adding a playful and useful touch to your redstone circuits.

  2. Oxidize over time, changing colour until it freezes into a statue.

  3. Be waxed or scraped to control its oxidation stage.

  4. Interact with the new Copper Chest to automate item handling in Minecraft 1.21.9.

It is a mob that blends utility, decoration and personality, enough to please builders and redstone engineers alike.

How to create a Copper Golem (once 1.21.9 is out)

Once the update is live, the Copper Golem will be craftable in survival.

Required materials:

  1. 2 copper blocks (any oxidation stage)

  2. 1 carved pumpkin

Crafting steps:

  1. Place two copper blocks vertically.

  2. Put the carved pumpkin on top.

The Copper Golem will appear and immediately start exploring its surroundings.

Tip: the oxidation stage of the blocks you use will determine the initial look of your golem.

Copper Chest and storage automation

Minecraft 1.21.9 should also introduce the Copper Chest, which works with the Copper Golem to move items automatically.

Copper Chest recipe (expected):

  1. Place a regular chest in the centre of the grid.

  2. Surround it with copper ingots.

How it works:

  1. Fill the Copper Chest with items (gold ingots, for example).

  2. Place another container nearby, such as a regular chest or a barrel.

Spawn a Copper Golem: it will move the items from the Copper Chest to the other container, no hoppers needed.

Why it matters:

  1. Build simple storage systems without complex redstone.

  2. Use several Copper Golems to speed up transfers.

Combine it with hoppers and dispensers for large-scale automation.

Oxidation and maintenance

Like copper blocks, Copper Golems go through four oxidation stages:

  1. Shiny copper (freshly crafted)

  2. Lightly oxidized (small green spots)

  3. Heavily oxidized (mostly green)

  4. Frozen statue (no longer moves)

Maintenance options:

Use an axe to scrape the oxidation off.
Apply a honeycomb to lock the appearance at any stage.

Builders can mix golems at different oxidation levels for creative scenery.

Potential uses of the Copper Golem

When it arrives in Minecraft 1.21.9, the Copper Golem could be used to:

  1. Automate storage with Copper Chests.

  2. Trigger redstone at random for minigames or randomizers.

  3. Decorate bases with scenes built around oxidation.

  4. Create interactive companions, NPC-style, in custom worlds.

The arrival of the Copper Golem in Minecraft 1.21.9 finally brings one of the community's favourite ideas to life. Its mix of charm, redstone interaction and automation potential will no doubt make it a favourite among technical and creative players alike.

Even if you cannot craft it yet, understanding how it works already lets you plan your builds so that your army of Copper Golems is ready on day one.
