Minecraft is full of mobs ready to carry you, as long as you know how to approach them and offer them their favourite treats. Whether you are crossing vast plains, sailing over lava seas in the Nether or taking to the skies, Minecraft mounts open up new ways to travel, explore and carry resources.
In this complete Minecraft mounts guide, you will discover every rideable creature in the game, how to tame or ride it, the items required and its favourite foods. From pigs to flying ghasts, we cover everything you need to become an accomplished rider in Minecraft.
Biome: Overworld
Taming: Not required
Breeding: Carrots, potatoes, beetroots
Required items: Saddle + Carrot on a stick

Overview:
The pig is often a player's first mount, more fun than practical. To ride it, put a saddle on its back and hold a carrot on a stick to steer it. Use the stick for a temporary boost of up to 5 blocks per second. Not the fastest, but probably the funniest.
Biomes: Plains, savannas
Taming: Mount it repeatedly until hearts appear
Breeding: Golden carrots or golden apples
Required items: Saddle, horse armour (optional)

Overview:
Horses are among the most versatile mounts in Minecraft. They come in several colours and patterns, with hidden speed, jump and health stats. You can breed faster horses over time by selecting high-stat parents. Horse armour adds defence: leather armour can be crafted, the other types are found in loot chests.
Biomes: Plains, savannas, meadows
Taming: Mount it until hearts appear
Breeding: Golden carrots or golden apples
Required items: Saddle + chest (optional)

Overview:
Donkeys work like horses but with lower stats. Their strength? You can attach a chest to them for a portable inventory, great for exploring and hauling.
Biome: None (breeding only)
Taming: Mount it until hearts appear
Breeding: Horse + Donkey offspring
Required items: Saddle + chest (optional)

Overview:
Mules offer a compromise between the horse's speed and the donkey's utility. They cannot breed, but they are perfect for long trips with cargo.
Biomes: Desert villages
Taming: Already passive
Breeding: Cactus
Required items: Saddle

Overview:
Camels carry two players, are out of reach of melee attacks from small mobs and can clear 3-block gaps. They easily step over fences and shallow water, making them excellent mounts in survival and multiplayer.
How to get one: Skeleton traps (thunderstorms)
Taming: Becomes passive once the skeleton rider is killed
Breeding: Impossible
Required items: Saddle (Java only)

Overview:
Rare and immune to drowning, skeleton horses are ridden like regular horses, with a bonus of underwater mobility that is handy for aquatic exploration.
Biomes: Nether lava lakes
Taming: Not required
Breeding: Warped fungus
Required items: Saddle + Warped fungus on a stick

Overview:
Striders are the only safe way to walk on lava. Fit them with a saddle, hold the warped fungus on a stick and steer them across the molten seas of the Nether. Avoid dry land: they become very slow out of the lava.
Biome: Soul Sand Valley (Nether)
Taming: Passive once raised from a dried ghast block
Breeding: Impossible
Required items: Harness

Overview:
The Happy Ghast is Minecraft's first flying mount. To raise one, find a dried ghast near the bone structures of the Nether, soak it in water in the Overworld, then raise the resulting ghastling. Once it is an adult, fit a harness crafted from leather, glass and wool.
Happy ghasts can carry up to four players and hover in place when stopped, providing a stable platform. Ideal for exploring the End, moving villagers in boats or building sky bases.

- Carry a lead with horses or camels so you do not lose them.
- Always have the required stick (carrot or fungus) to steer pigs or striders.
- Breeding mounts with the best stats (such as horses) can noticeably improve performance.
- Build dedicated stables or lava pools for your mounts.
- Consider raising a Happy Ghast for multiplayer journeys or villager relocation projects.

From pigs and horses to flying ghasts, Minecraft offers a wide range of mounts, each with its own mechanics, taming methods and ideal use cases. Whether you want to cross lava lakes, carry your loot across the plains or fly through the skies, there is a mount for every journey.
With additions such as craftable saddles and happy ghasts, mounts are more useful and more fun than ever.
