Minecraft Java 26.1 is out! Named "Tiny Takeover", Mojang presents this update as the cutest ever made. Far from shaking up the dimensions, it focuses on refining the existing world, giving creatures a visual makeover and delivering major technical optimisations.
Beneath its light-hearted look, this update deeply changes memory management, the lighting engine and the file structure. Whether you are a survival builder or a server manager, the changes are concrete.
On the menu of this guide:
This is the flagship addition of version 26.1. The Golden Dandelion finally gives players the power to freeze the growth of animals permanently.

No need to look far: surround a regular Dandelion with Gold Nuggets in your crafting table. A recipe within reach from your very first days of adventure.
A simple right click on a baby mob with this flower triggers green particles: its growth is stopped. It will stay small indefinitely, ideal for your zoos or your decoration. To restart its ageing, repeat the operation with the same flower.
Careful, the magic does not work on everyone. Undead creatures (Zombies, Zombified Piglins and so on) as well as Villagers are immune to this effect.

Mojang has completely rewritten the visual code of baby mobs. No more miniature adults with strange proportions! Every little one now has its own model, unique textures and specific animations.
Nearly 40 entities have been reworked, including the classics (Cows, Pigs, Wolves) but also rarer ones such as the Armadillo, the Sniffer or the Axolotl. The result is a much more immersive and visually consistent world.

Beyond looks, several fixes improve the experience: baby Polar Bears are more peaceful towards Foxes, hitboxes are more accurate, and rabbit animations have been smoothed out.

Babies no longer make do with "sped-up adult sounds". They now have their own sound bank, making farms far less monotonous.
Musicians, take note: place a Note Block on a Copper Block. Depending on the copper's oxidation level, you get four different trumpet tones. A boon for your musical Redstone circuits!

This is a revolution for survival: the Name Tag can now be crafted with 1 Paper and 1 metal Nugget (Gold, Iron or Copper). In return, they disappear from the loot of ancient structures and from Librarian stocks.
The Villager trading system becomes deterministic. Initial offers now depend on your world's "seed". In addition, data pack creators can now edit trade tables with ease.
Mojang has rewritten the light management algorithm. Night Vision now acts as a real ambient light source instead of merely boosting colours. Rendering is more stable and fixes old visual bugs.
The folder architecture changes radically. Dimensions and player data are now sorted into specific subfolders (dimensions/, players/). Your old worlds must be converted on first launch. Make a backup, no exceptions!
Version 26.1 requires Java 25. The default RAM allocation rises to 4 GB. The integration of the ZGC garbage collector drastically reduces micro-stutters (lag spikes) while exploring.
The "1.X.X" format gives way to a year-based scheme. 26.1 means: the first major update of 2026. A change that clarifies the development calendar for the community.

How does the Golden Dandelion work? It permanently stops the growth of a baby mob with a right click. A second click cancels the effect.
Can I craft Name Tags? Yes, with 1 paper and 1 nugget (iron, gold or copper).
Do I need to update my server? Yes, but stay alert: the file structure changes. Back up your data and check that your host supports Java 25.
What is this "26.1" name? It is Mojang's new naming format based on the release year (2026).
